Plothener Lake District

Highlight • Lake

The Plothner Lake District (also called the Land of 1000 Ponds) is an area of several ponds. The area extends over Dreba, Knau and Plothen itself. In this area there is an almost countless variety of animals, especially water birds, which are very common here and are rarely seen. The entire area is therefore protected. You should respect that in order to preserve this beautiful piece of nature, not go biking or hiking off the beaten track.

It is really a dream
The birch is a harbinger: As the first domestic deciduous tree, it shows its green dress in spring. The first is wherever brownfields have to be repopulated. As a pioneer tree species, it literally prepares the ground for subsequent trees such as oak or beech - until it is gradually replaced by them. Pure birch forests are therefore rare in Germany. Of the countless species, the silver birch and the swamp birch are particularly common among us. Both are easily recognized by their white bark. At first it is smooth, later thin pieces that are reminiscent of paper come off. Birch bark actually served as a substitute for paper in ancient times.

Declaration of love by birch

In many cultures and regions, trees had (and still have) a special mythological meaning. The oak stands for strength and steadfastness, the pine for endurance and modesty, the fir for beauty and vitality. The birch is the symbol of light and the awakening of spring. This symbolism has survived in the maypole. Of the different customs around the maypole, the love may is one of the most beautiful: on the night of May 1st, the unmarried men of a village of their chosen ones place a small, decorated birch in front of the house - as a sign of their favor and their love.

Finkenmühle Hamlet and Ponds

Highlight • Settlement

The hamlet of Finkenmühle consists of the four-sided farm Finkenmühle and the so-called Hübelhaus, it is located about two kilometers north of Volkmannsdorf and can be reached from there via connecting routes. The forest and numerous ponds in the immediate vicinity of the hamlet in the Southeast Thuringian Slate Mountains are under nature and landscape protection.

The cutting mill located on the southern edge of today's Plothener Teiche nature reserve was located as a four-sided farm (Vorwerk) after the Thirty Years' War in the possession of the manor of Külmla, at that time in the possession of the Lords of Graefendorf and Feilitzsch. [1] In 1785 the Külmlaer knight's estate with the old manor house burned down completely, therefore the owners were in financial need [2]. Older news about this mill are not known. The wealth of forests and the existing hydropower promoted the establishment of forest trades. The lumberjacks needed a cutting mill to recycle the logs that had been felled. The sale of planks and wooden slats was possible all year round. The field names Kohlung for a piece of forest west of the mill and Kienberg for the elevation to the east also attest to the charcoal burner trade and the presence of pine soot burners. Around 1880 the property was sold to the manor in Knau. The Hübelshof, a popular domicile for holiday guests, is being built on the remote settlement square.
