Canal du Centre

Highlight (Segment) • River

The Canal du Centre was designed to connect the two major rivers, the Loire and the Saône, for commercial purposes. It links Chalon-sur-Saône, a town on the banks of the Saône, to Digoin, on the banks of the Loire. It is 112 kilometers long. This waterway provided Burgundy with an invaluable asset at the time, connecting the Mediterranean Sea to the Atlantic Ocean. The first stone was laid in 1784. The first barge sailed on the canal in 1791, in the midst of the French Revolution.

Canal du Centre at Chagny

Highlight • River

Excellent paved flat bike trail along the historic 1793 Canal du Centre, connecting at Chalon-sur-Saône the transeuropean EuroVelo 6 route (coming from the Black Sea) with the ViaRhôna route and leads via Digoin to the Loire Valley trails and Nantes with its intersection of EuroVelo 1 Vélodyssée along the Atlantic coast.
The canal now only serves for recreational boating.

The Canal du Centre was built between 1783 and 1793 to ensure communication between the Mediterranean and the Atlantic. The greenway that runs alongside the canal is part of EuroVelo 6 and skirts southern Burgundy between the Saône and the Loire.

This segment offers beautiful panoramas of the Santenay vineyards.

Greenway of the Canal du Centre

Highlight • Cycleway

Very good quality road in the forest, partially shaded, without cars because of the cycle path. In total, the Canal du Center greenway is 129 km long and goes from Chalon to Digoin.

April 15, 2022,Chalon-sur-Saone nach Montceau-les-Mines
The EV6 leads to the Canal du Center just after Chalon-sur-Saone. The canal is 112 km long and flows from Chalon-sur-Saone to Digoin.

Via Chagny we went to Saint-Leger-sur-Dheune, where we took a short break, then to Saint-Sulien-sur-Dheune to today's final destination Montceau-les-Mines.

Again today we had wonderful weather and we could do without the leg warmers.

Along the canals, short enough to relax a bit.

As predicted, it got hot today. When I got to the hotel, the thunderstorm forecast for the afternoon came.
The EV6 on the Canal du Center is well signposted from the first signposted in Chalon sur Saône. Asphalted throughout.

In the morning we cycle through the very pretty old town of Chalon. The cathedral impresses again with the "sounding" atmosphere! We also get stamps in our credentials again.
We are greeted by dark clouds that dissolve quickly and the wind blows strongly towards us until Chagny. Also a pretty town with a simple Romanesque church. Café et crossiant!

> Sunrise (pictures)

We set off at 6:20 a.m. and then experienced the sunrise several times.

A new one after every bend in the canal or every hill.

> Crayfish (pictures)

It must have rained during the night, and a crayfish crossed the road from the canal to the river.
