Devil's Bridge, Kirkby Lonsdale

Highlight • Historical Site

Nice views. Apparently, there is no record of it ever been built - so it was assumed the Devil built it 🙃. We used to jump off it in younger days, there are now 'bylaw' signs which prohibit it. There is also a burger van if you fancy something to eat or a brew. Massively popular with motorbikers on weekends and in good weather. Free car park opposite from which to start your ride.

Kingsdale Valley Road

Highlight • Cycleway

The beautiful open plateau of the Kingsdale Valley. Lovely strip of quiet tarmac which is often empty as the road is gated at the Northern end

Deepdale Climb (White Moss)

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

A tough climb from Dent, heading south, at an average of 10% for 1.3 miles. Probably peaks in excess of 25%. There are a couple of gates which might need to be opened en-route. For fit cyclists or you might find yourself walking. The climb leads to a long descent through Kingsdale, so worth the effort.

Dent Village

Highlight • Settlement

A real must-visit village with cobbled streets, little lumps and gorgeous pastel-coloured houses. On clear days you can see as far as the sea in on direction and towards the Lake District in the other (if it's a clear winter day you might get snow-capped peaks in your line of sight). There's a train station here that's on the Settle-Carlisle line and it's the highest station in England - a bit out of town though. The train line goes over the two huge viaducts (Arten Gill and Dent Head), which were both built using massive blocks of Dent ‘marble’ from local quarries that are now out of use.

Loads of history here (to do with knitting), scattered farms, three pubs and a lot of charm.

Gawthrop Hill Climb

Highlight • Trail

Horrid at the bottom. Easily 20%. Worth it for the view at the top!

Barbondale Valley

Highlight • Gorge

My happy place. The descent of Barbondale heading South West toward Barbon has to be one of the most beautiful in the country. It's a tough climb from Gawthrop, but worth it!

Barbon Dale Road Climb

Highlight • Cycleway

Great cycling road in either direction, steady climb with a couple of tough sections heading east. Tough climb at the start heading west then a great descent! My favourite road!
