Downham Village

Highlight • Pub

Amazing little village with excellent pub (Assheton Arms). The entire village has been owned by one family since 1558 so every property is rented. No satellite dishes are permitted, overhead cables or road signs. There isn’t even a village sign. Was the village where they filmed Whistle Down the Wind.

On the banks of the picturesque River RIbble and just within the Forest of Bowland AONB, Sawley is a delightful little village for walkers. There are many fine hiking routes in the area, from the moors to the north and Pendle Hill, which is seen beautifully to the south.

In the village are the ruins of a former Cistercian monastery, Sawley Abbey, which was established in 1147 by William de Percy. All your accommodation and sustenance needs are met by the Spread Eagle, an excellent country pub.

View of Pendle Hill

Highlight • Summit

On this section of the Ribble Way, you are treated to fantastic views to iconic Pendle Hill across the valley. The rolling pastures to the west are home to the village of Grindleton, a small rural community with a history of spinning and weaving. The village has its own heritage trail. Visit the Buck Inn or the Duke of York pub for more information.
