Juniper Valley near Wonsees

Highlight (Segment) ‱ Natural Monument

Unfortunately, the juniper has gotten a bit old and many other bushes are slowly overgrowing the rocky slope. Once again, sheep were to graze in order to continue to secure the foundation for the juniper heath.

đŸ›ïž Sanspareil Rock Garden

Highlight ‱ Natural Monument

At the sight of the rock garden, a lady-in-waiting is said to have exclaimed in 1746: "Ah, c'est sans pareil" - "That is unequaled!", Whereupon Margrave Friedrich ordered the renaming of the town of Zwernitz in Sanspareil in the same year. And indeed, this name is very appropriate for the rock garden. Individual geometric garden areas were embedded in an almost natural forest environment, which is characterized by bizarre rock formations. On some of the rocks, exotic-looking cottages and rural huts were built, which served as retreats in the "Hermitage Sanspareil". Many of these buildings decayed over time or were sold to demolition in the 19th century.

Today, however, is still the ruin theater - a mixture of grotto and ruin. The auditorium is under a powerful natural rock arch; The orchestra pit, the backdrop arches and the back wall are made of quarry stones. "Behind this miraculous arch, however, you can see the theater emerging from rocks, and embellished and corrected by the hand of art ... The whole makes a powerful and indescribable impression in its position, form and arrangement ..." (From a travelogue of 1812)

Calypso Grotto and Ruin Theater

Highlight ‱ Monument

A mighty rock arch forms the auditorium of the Ruin Theater, built in 1747. The orchestra pit, the backdrop arches, and the back wall are made of rubble stone. The 86-seat mini-theater is used by the Bayreuth Studio Stage for performances in July and August. The ambiance of this small Rococo theater transports the audience to the world of the 18th century.

Felsendorf Krögelstein

Highlight ‱ Natural Monument

The picturesque rock village of Krögelstein in northern Franconian Switzerland is nestled in the narrow valley of the Kaiserbach. The fields are on the heights and the meadows in the upper and lower valley. The arch of an old brickwork, the remnant of the castle of the Knights of Crogelstein, arches over a narrow rock gorge below the church. In July 1523, soldiers of the Swabian League set fire to the castle and placed four tons of powder under the large waiting tower, which lifted it from the ground and plunged it into the ditch. The landmark of the village is the "Old Fritz", a 30 meter high dolomite rock. Also worth mentioning are the "Sweden rock" and the "Lion rock", which has the shape of a lying lion.
