Josef Groll Chapel

Highlight • Religious Site

Here you'll be reminded of one of the greatest names in beer history: Josef Groll, the inventor of Pilsner, came from Vilshofen. The small chapel lies peacefully on the way to Aldersbach and makes your tour a true pilgrimage "in the footsteps of Pilsner".

Schweiklberg Benedictine Abbey

Highlight • Religious Site

The abbey church, built between 1909 and 1911 in Art Nouveau style, was consecrated to the Holy Trinity in 1925. The image of Christ as a Pantocrator in the apse dominates the entire abbey church and attracts everyone's attention.
It's worth a visit.

The Roman Catholic parish church of John the Baptist stands at the eastern end of the main square of the city of Vilshofen on the Danube in the Passau district in Lower Bavaria.
Originally an independent secular parish was assumed for Vilshofen. In 1236 a dean Heinrich was mentioned in a document. A collegiate foundation was founded with Heinrich Tuschl von Söldenau in 1376. The existing parish church was incorporated and a renewal and expansion of the parish church began. Heinrich Tuschl von Söldenau specified in his will the payment of 400 guilders for the building of the church. The vaults of the side chapels and the year 1513 above the south west portal show that construction was also carried out in the late Gothic period. In 1671 the tower was raised. After the cracks of Kaspar Bichlmaier and Carlo Antonio Carlone were in vain, Christoph Zuggaul received an order. During the town fire in 1794, the church was also cremated. The collegiate foundation was secularized in 1803. In 1803/1804 the building was rebuilt with master mason Martin Desch from Pfarrkirchen. The surrounding walls and the late Gothic side chapels were preserved, the central columns were removed and the nave was covered with a slatted vault. On the orders of Elector Maximilian IV Joseph, the baroque furnishings were transferred here from the secularized St. Nikola monastery in Passau. In 1865 the tower was raised with an octagonal structure.

In 2017 the Rensch company built a new organ with 3 manuals and 47 registers behind the late baroque prospectus from 1760 by Joseph Deutschmann.
