Mühlgraben in Eisfeld

Highlight • River

The Mühlgraben is an artificial branch of the Werra in the urban area of Eisfeld

The mills stood on the Werra or on the Werra Mühlgraben.

Both are only a few meters apart and are crossed by the road bridge.

For pedestrians, the island between the Werra and the Mühlgraben is accessible via stairs and bridges between Herrenmühlweg and Schustergasse. The path is called "Am Wehr". Access to the water is only possible to a limited extent due to flood walls.

The main traffic on the B4 from Coburg to Erfurt used to go through Justus Jonasstraße and the Werra/Mühlgrabe. Today there is the motorway and a bypass road to the west around Eisfeld. The old B4 is no longer a federal road here.

Car traffic on the Mühlgraben is still considerable and dangerous for cyclists and pedestrians. As far as I know, there is currently no speed limit of 30, no speed limiters and no zebra crossings.

Trinity Church Eisfeld

Highlight • Religious Site

The construction of the hall church, initially dedicated to Saint Nicholas, began at the instigation of the Würzburg cathedral provost Kilian von Bibra with the construction of the three-aisled nave in 1488. The choir in the width of the central nave was built in 1505. The square tower was completed around 1530. Justus Jonas the Elder, a
Friend of Martin Luther, was pastor from 1553 to 1555.

In the course of visiting the church, the church tower can be climbed to the viewing gallery, from which there is a good view of the Eisfeld and the mountain ranges.

Justus Jonas House (Eisfeld Parsonage)

Highlight • Historical Site

Justus Jonas lived in this house, a man of that time, a close confidante and friend of Martin Luther. He still plays an important role for Eisfeld today. He was not among the reformers who wrote great theological writings. Theologically oriented towards Luther, he represented the interests of the Wittenberg reformers on canonical and administrative levels. Due to his legal knowledge and also due to his practical experience in shaping the Reformation, he was a particularly capable negotiator.
In the last years of his life, Jonas was worn down by inner-Protestant difficulties, as well as family and health problems. In 1553 he found his last position as pastor and superintendent in Eisfeld, where he died on October 9, 1555 and was buried in the cemetery outside the town (today the "Alter Friedhof").

The Justus Jonas hall is still in the vicarage today.

Old School Eisfeld

Highlight • Historical Site

The school building was built in 1575 and later expanded. It is the second oldest school building in Thuringia. A half-timbered floor rises above the sandstone ground floor with two arched portals and several inscription plaques. The "Schoolman", a late medieval stone sculpture on the east corner of the "Old School", is interpreted in folk tales as a treasure finder and donor of the historic building.

Underpass of the A73 Bridge

Highlight • Bridge

You drive from Eisfeld to Harras, passing under the A 73. The view is impressive, but the bike path towards Harras is even more so, great path and fun to ride.
