Kallmünz Stone Bridge

Highlight • Bridge

Here is a double atonement cross incorporated in railing, which was carved from a single stone and connected to the crossbar. These tell the following story:

A pair of scissors and a cross tell the story of an atonement and a deadly dispute. Here a tailor should have stabbed a baker or vice versa. In a modification of the above legend, a tailor and a baker, both from Kallmünz, are said to have fought a duel on the Naabbrücke, which ended fatally for both.

St. Michael's Parish Church, Kallmünz

Highlight • Religious Site

It is assumed that the church and parish were built around 800 and that the monastery of St. Paul in Regensburg was granted patronage rights. In the year 983 a note appears in a document that Bishop Wolfgang exercised this right.
In 1528 the Reformation also took place in Kallmünz and the parish became Protestant on the orders of Prince Ottheinrich von Pfalz-Neuburg. From 1614 - 1618 the so-called Counter-Reformation took place, which made Kallmünz become Catholic again.
The church, built in the Romanesque style when the parish was founded, of which a portal is still preserved in the northern outer wall of the church and is integrated into it, was renovated between 1751 and 1758 by Pastor Michael Bockhes (from Bruck in der Oberpfalz) except for the northern outer wall already mentioned was broken off and a new church was built in the rococo style. The painting was done by Matthias Zintl and shows great artistic ability.
The church is dedicated to St. Archangel Michael, which is indicated by the high altar picture and the ceiling fresco in the nave. In the dome painting of the chancel St. Trinity shown giving the Scapular to St. Simon Stock, who i.a. is surrounded by donors for the church building and Pastor Bockhes. The church is considered a special gem in the region, above all because of its uniform furnishings, and is popular with visitors.

The "House Without a Roof," as it is officially known, is a still-used cave dwelling in the Upper Palatinate market town of Kallmünz. The cave is located north of the Vils River at the southern end of the Schlossberg (Castle Hill), upon which the Kallmünz Castle ruins stand. The entrance is set back from Vilsgasse (Vils Lane) at the foot of an approximately 20-meter-high limestone cliff of the Schlossberg, and access is via a passage between the listed residential buildings at Vilsgasse 26 and Vilsgasse 28.

The house consists of a natural cave in the dolomite rock, the opening of which is closed off by a plastered wall with a door and windows. Inside, there is a hallway, a living room, two storage rooms fitted into rock niches, and a historic smokehouse.

The oldest known mention of the cave dwelling is found in a document dated 1707, preserved in the land registry archive in Amberg. In the 19th century, it was also referred to as the "House Under the Rock." In 1908, it was sold to the owner of the blacksmith's shop located across the road, and it remains in his family's possession. The last permanent resident left the house in 1937 because he developed rheumatism due to the damp cave air.

Pathway Between Kallmünz and Traidendorf

Highlight (Segment) • Cycleway

Very narrow pedestrian/cycle path between Kallmünz and Traidendorf. However, the state road 2165 is busier and a suitable alternative. It is better to use the wider cycle path on the left towards Traidendorf, but the access road is unfortunately somewhat hidden.
