Frederikshavn Church

Highlight • Religious Site

Frederikshavn Church, with 1,100 seats, is the largest church in Frederikshavn.

Completed in 1892, this remarkable building was designed by Vilhelm Ahlmann (1852–1928) in the National Romantic style. The central structure rises on the ground plan of a Greek cross. Ahlmann incorporated elements of an octagon as a recurring geometric feature. The central church tower, topped with a copper dome, is modeled after the neo-Gothic bell tower of Aachen Cathedral.

At the end of the 19th century, the city of Frederikshavn grew so much that Fladstrand Church was no longer sufficient. Planning for another church began in 1882, but it wasn't until 1890 that King Christian IX was able to lay the foundation stone. The church was consecrated on October 23, 1892.

The building underwent renovations in 2019. In addition to structural work, energy efficiency improvements were implemented, including the installation of underfloor heating and LED lighting. Visual changes were also made. The interior received new tiles, oak parquet flooring, and a redesigned chancel. Today, the parish has approximately 5,000 members.

In addition to the largest collection of bookplates in the world, "Frederikshavn Kunstmuseum og Exlibrissamling" also has a large collection of local art.
It is a special museum for art on paper with the world's largest exhibition of bookplates with around 500,000 originals, including from Scandinavian royal families.
Every year there are 6 - 8 exhibitions of Danish and foreign contemporary art and a large collection of works by Karl Bovin and other regional artists.
