Stary Smokowiec is the oldest Tatra recreation settlement known for its enchanting mountain scenery. It is located at the foot of the High Tatras in Slovakia, 1010 m above sea level. and is part of the administrative structure of the city of Vysoké Tatry.
The development of the city dates back mainly to the nineteenth century, when Jan Rainer expanded the settlement with sanatorium buildings: Flora (in 1839), the Swiss House and Bellevue (1850) and others. It should be mentioned that later, on the occasion of the World Ski Championships in 1970, large concrete buildings were crammed into the architectural gems, which slightly disturbed the idyllic character of Stary Smokovec.
The town also lost some of its charm on November 19, 2004, due to a hurricane that almost completely destroyed the surrounding forests (area of at least 14,000 hectares). The Slovaks were removing the damage for as long as 2 years. Due to the radical change of the landscape, a permit was issued for the expansion of the already existing, wide ski network.
