Niebüll Town Centre

Highlight • Settlement

Niebüll is the tourist hub in the extreme northwest of the republic. From here, the islands of Sylt, Föhr and Amrum as well as the Halligen in the Wadden Sea World Heritage Site, the North Sea coast itself, southern Denmark and the cities of Husum and Flensburg can be reached in a short time, whether by car, motorhome, train or AutoZug or by bike. The city is an ideal place to stay for day trips throughout the region. And even the Hamburg metropolitan region can be reached every hour due to the excellent transport connections.

In addition to its three museums - the Richard Haizmann Museum for Modern Art, the Natural History Museum and the Frisian Museum - the city of Niebüll itself offers a wide range of leisure activities, such as an indoor swimming pool, Wehle natural outdoor pool, bowling alleys, tennis courts, indoor tennis courts, squash courts, riding halls, Skater park, all sports facilities for classic recreational sports as well as a well-developed network of cycling and hiking trails and a Nordic walking park with 40km of routes on 6 routes. Golf fans will find an exemplary 18-hole golf course about 15 km away in scenic surroundings on the edge of the Langenberg Forest. Other golf courses on the mainland are in Husum and in Denmark, relatively close to the border. In addition, the local recreation areas Legerader Wald and Marschenpark as well as the inner-city green spaces such as Malmesbury Park or the city park invite you to relax outdoors.

An absolute highlight from the mainland is the Nolde Foundation in Seebüll, where Emil and Adda Nolde's extensive estate is managed in the spirit of the artist, his work is preserved for posterity and shown in a special exhibition.

Seebüll-Hof (Emil Nolde House)

Highlight • Historical Site

The Seebüll residential and studio house, designed by Emil Nolde himself, is an outstanding modernist artist's house.
The almost sixty-year-old Emil Nolde was at the height of his fame when he was looking for a new home in the 1920s. He put out feelers as far as Hamburg and finally found his new home in Seebüll within sight of his father's farm. In Seebüll, the Nolde couple designed their "magic home": the architecture was based on his designs, the garden was based on joint ideas, the interior was partly designed by him and partly made by both of them. This resulted in a total work of art in which the couple lived together for twenty years until Ada's death in 1946, where he also died in 1956 and where the two found eternal rest next to each other.

With its straight lines, the building is reminiscent of the Bauhaus architecture of the 1920s. Nolde deliberately chose the architectural contrast to the thatched Frisian farms in the area: the red brick building with the narrow windows and flat roof stands on a mound and rises confidently from the flat landscape.

The originally furnished living rooms on the ground floor can be viewed. In the studio, the nine-part main work "The Life of Christ" (1911/12) is impressive. In the legendary picture room, which was built in 1937, the paintings can be seen in the historical presentation. From 2020 to 2022, the Nolde House was renovated in accordance with monument protection and technically upgraded. For the first time, the historic studio will be accessible without steps; with the 67th annual exhibition in 2023, art will return to the Nolde House.

The Rosenkranz-Rudbøl border crossing is probably one of the most beautiful of the Germany-Denmark border crossings. And one of the most unusual. Because here the border runs for a length of 130 meters in the middle of the road and then right through Ruttebüller Lake (Rudbøl Sjø).

The road that winds between the houses to the Rosenkranz-Rudbøl border crossing is narrow. This unusual border town is located near the west coast and near the Emil Nolde Foundation in Neukirchen. On the road, pedestrians are constantly looking for the embedded border markers. So you don't know exactly whether you are in Germany or Denmark, and the border runs partly between the houses in a westerly direction.

But why was the border drawn this way at the Rosenkranz-Rudbøl border crossing? One explanation describes the personal wish of the house owners on the western side to belong to Denmark. In fact, part of the border runs between the properties.

The other version says that the planned border should have run right through the Old German Border Krog and so it was agreed that the border should be in the middle of the road. The most likely scenario, however, is that the Ruttebüller See was to be allocated half to both countries in order to give the rush cutters and fishermen equal opportunities.
The western Koog, however, should definitely belong to Denmark and so it was agreed that the border between Denmark and Germany should run along the middle of the top of the dike towards the Koog. And this very top of the dike is the road.
The border itself is marked with buoys on the Ruttebüller See.
