Kiebitzer excavator pond in Falkenberg (Elster).
The excavated pond was created in GDR times by the mining of valuable gravel, which was needed for the production of much needed sand-lime bricks. With a small narrow-gauge railway, the freshly mined gravel was driven into the nearby limestone sandstone factory and further processed. Thanks to the then mayor Gerhard Mollenhauer and many helping companies from Falkenberg, the "small excavated pond" was developed into a wonderful recreational area.
