Roman Steps, Georgenberg, Berschis

Highlight • Historical Site

Roman steps, Georgenberg, Berschis
Roman period and early Middle Ages
Various remains of walls, including parts of a closing wall with a gate, belong to a fortified late Roman settlement. Steps carved into the rock of the access path probably also date from this period. The square depressions on the plateau served as water reservoirs (cisterns).
Roman coins and shards of vessels mostly date from the 4th century AD. The settlement was also inhabited during the 5th to 7th centuries. The cisterns were probably converted into weaving cellars at that time. Vessels from North Africa and northern Italy provide evidence of extensive contacts. At that time there was a cemetery in Hellig Bungert and on Capölla, at the northeastern foot of the hill. At least one early medieval grave comes from the Hügei plateau next to the chapel.
A special feature of St. Georgenberg is the Ughür fountain. This naturally formed grotto was formerly used as a fresh water reservoir.

St. George's Chapel, Georgenberg, Berschis
The St. George's Chapel, located between Zurich and Chur, is probably already well known to most people, as many have already driven past it on the motorway. However, the St. George's Chapel is a really worthwhile destination for a trip for many reasons! Architecturally, it is the oldest surviving Romanesque church in eastern Switzerland. The first written mention probably dates back to 1253. Facing southeast, it has a two-aisled vaulted structure, which is unique in Switzerland. In the 17th century, the St. George's Chapel was extended with an annex. However, the changes made were partially reversed during a renovation in 1900. The oldest surviving part of the St. George's Chapel is the apse (the vault that protrudes in the structure) together with the two-aisled hall. Both were probably built in the 1st millennium AD.

Lourdes Grotto Berschis

Highlight • Religious Site

Lourdes Grotto, Berschis from 1921
Out of the gratitude of the population that Berschis had been spared from foot-and-mouth disease and at the suggestion of Abbot Joseph Mariétan of St. Maurice, the Lourdes Grotto in the Holy Grove was built in 1921, largely through forced labor. On the Assumption of Mary in 1921, it was ceremoniously consecrated by the Bishop of Bethlehem in front of numerous believers who had traveled from all over Sarganserland. The white Madonna, which stands above the altar, was a gift from herbalist Johann Künzle. An artfully forged grille secures the sanctuary. The well-maintained grotto, located a little off the road, invites you to pray silently.
Consecration: August 15, 1921

St. Eusebius Parish Church, Berschis

Highlight • Religious Site

Parish Church of St. Eusebius, Berschis
In terms of church history, we would like to look at the following key dates: The consecration of the Catholic Church of St. Eusebius took place in 1502. As in Flums in 1529, the Reformation was initially well received. However, the old conditions were restored in 1532. Berschis made it a point to have the village church and cemetery blessed again by Auxiliary Bishop Stephan Tschuggli in July 1533. In ecclesiastical terms, Berschis was affiliated with Flums until 1703, where the Lords of Gräpplang had the right of patronage. Berschis received its own priest. After Berschis and Tscherlach separated from the Flums mother church, they formed their own parish in 1714. After the old church was demolished, the new one was consecrated in 1880; it stands on the same rocky outcrop as the old one. Text / Source: Walensee pastoral unit
