Steinerner Steg (Stone Bridge) over the Passer, Merano

Highlight (Segment) • Bridge

The Steinerne Steg is an old bridge over the Passer in Merano in Burggrafenamt (South Tyrol). The two-arched bridge was built in 1616-17 in place of an older wooden bridge by the Brixen architect Andrä Tanner; she is now closed to traffic. The sometimes to be found assumption, the Italian name Ponte Romano pointed to a Roman predecessor, does not correspond to the historical facts: The name was invented in 1935 by the fascist authorities in the course of their Italianization campaign in South Tyrol. [2] In the Merano address book of 1929 is still Ponte di Pietra listed as a name.

The summer promenade is located on the south side of the Passer, from the Post Bridge towards the Passeier Valley. It is lined with large trees and other plant species such as Lebanon cedar, sequoia, poplar and pine species from different climates and is particularly suitable for a shady walk. The development of the promenade from the city park to the overgrown river floodplain is particularly impressive: the further east you go, the closer you get to the Passer and its natural banks.

The Merano summer promenade was laid out around 1866 and leads along the Passer to the “Steinerner Steg”. To commemorate the many vacations of Empress Elisabeth in the spa town of Merano, there is a memorial at the lower entrance of the summer promenade, which at the same time marks the end of the “Sissi-Weg” to Trauttmansdorff Castle.

Sculptures on the Gilf Promenade

Highlight • Structure

In this section on the northern bank of the Passer, there are artistic sculptures made from a wrought-iron framework, moss and plants to discover. Every year, the figures are planted anew by the city nursery, which means that they are a little surprise every year.

Steinerner Steg (Stone Bridge)

Highlight • Bridge

The bridge was built in 1617, unlike wooden bridges, the massive stone arches also withstood flooding. Thus, in the past, the Steinerne Steg was often the only crossing over the Passer. From here you can see far into the Gilfenklamm and even in midsummer it is pleasantly cool here!

Merano Old Town

Highlight • Settlement

Very nice city, a stroll or a sightseeing tour worth in any case. As the second largest city in South Tyrol, Merano has a certain flair between hectic and deceleration.

Thermal Baths Square, Merano

Highlight • Settlement

Lively square in Meran directly on the banks of the Passer. Here you will find a wide range of bars, small cafés and restaurants. Or maybe you just want to sit on one of the park benches and watch the hustle and bustle.
