Lealholm Village

Highlight • River

Lealholm is a pretty riverside village in the Esk Valley, an ideal base for exploring the North York Moors National Park.

It is on the Esk Valley Line, allowing you to hop on a train to Whitby in just half an hour, or head west to the beautiful villages that lie in lee of the high heather moorland, a beautiful landscape to explore on foot.

The 18th-century Board Inn has rooms and serves hearty, good food made from locally sourced produce. During the day, Shepherds Hall Tea Room is also a tempting pit stop.

Danby Beacon

Highlight • Historical Site

Danby Beacon dates back to the 1600s, when Britain was living under the threat of French invasion. Fast forward to the 1930s and the site became one of the first radar stations built to protect the North East during the Second World War. It was functional until the 1960s.

The old wooden beacon eventually fell to ruin. However, a modern beacon has been put up in its place and serves as an important landmark in this part of Yorkshire. A blue, stainless steel basket mimics a flame, over 16 feet (5 m) above the ground. It is held aloft by a corten column, designed to reflect the colouring of the surrounding moorland.

It occupies the high ground above the villages of Danby and Lealholm and rewards with a staggering panorama on a clear day.
