Himmelpfort Lock

Highlight • Structure

The first lock between the Haussee and the Stolpsee was built in connection with the navigability of the Woblitz in 1752. In order to accommodate the growing shipping on the waters there, a lock was built between 1879 and 1882 according to the Finow standard, reconstructed in 1907 and renovated and rebuilt in 1976. Before the reconstruction in 1976, the lock chamber had sloping gravity walls made of bricks with driven wooden piles for mooring the ships.

Monastery church with ruins in Himmelpfort

Highlight • Religious Site

The so-called brewery (Lage) is a building from the late 14th century with a simple, well-structured blind gable. Red brick, like the monastery church, was used as the building material. It is the only partially preserved outbuilding of the monastery. Its exact original purpose is unknown. In 1858, the building was used as a granary. Later, it served as a residential building. In 1945, the gable on the southeast side collapsed when the neighboring bridge over the lock ditch leading to the Himmelpfort lock was blown up in the final days of the war. In 2010, the brewery was destroyed by an arson fire, down to its surrounding walls. In 2016, the restoration of the roof began, initially with the securing of the gable, which is of historical significance.

Himmelpfort Monastery Ruins

Highlight • Historical Site

This is where Himmelpfort got its name from. In the 13th century, the Cistercian monastery "Coeli Porta" (Heaven's Gate) was founded by Margrave Albrecht. Although the centuries have not been kind to it, there are still some remains to be seen here, and with a little imagination you can imagine the old monastery complex.

Himmelpfort Christmas Post Office

Highlight • Monument

It started sometime after the mid-1980s: letters addressed to Santa Claus began to arrive in Himmelpfort. What to do? It has started sending replies. And today more than 250,000 letters arrive in Himmelpfort every year, all of which are answered by the hard-working helpers, with Christmas stamps and a special postmark.

Moderfitzsee Bathing Area

Highlight • Beach

This great bathing spot is located on the Moderfitzsee. Characteristics: nice, firm sandy bottom, you gradually get deeper into the water (ideal for children), 2 islands for better swimmers. Large sandy beach! - The monk at the front of the road (large wooden sculpture) shows us the way. There are signs for hikers and cyclists, but drivers have to find their way differently.
