Church of Saint Nicholas of Molos

Highlight • Religious Site

This church, located in Solomos square, is the only Venetian-style building that survived the 1953 earthquake and has been restored maintaining its original features.
Originally the church was built on an island which was connected to the mainland by a bridge, later this island became an integral part of the city.
For many centuries the church belonged to the Guild of Sailors.
Dating back to the 17th century, it is the oldest building in Solomos square, it was built in the Renaissance style except for the bell tower which is more reminiscent of the Byzantine style.
Inside are the liturgical vestments of San Dionisio, the protector of the island, who for a period of his life lent his services in this church.

The Statue of Liberty (Greek: Ágalma tis Eleftherias) is located on Solomos Square (Platia Solomou) in the city of Zakynthos.

The monument is a symbol of
freedom. In the illustration, the female figure holds a wreath in her raised hands.

The square is named after the
national poet Dionysios Solomos, who wrote the "Hymn to Liberty" (the Greek national anthem).
