Oude spoorweg Poperinge-Hazebroek

Highlight • Trail

Unpaved path along the old railway line and the Vleterbeek stream.
Choice of gravel or singletrack. The singletrack contains some technical sections, and near the Tjoekebos, there is a technical practice loop.

Around 1870, a railway line was built between Poperinge and Hazebroek. In 1915, the army laid a double track and dismantled everything after the war.

This railway line was the main and virtually the only line for supplying Ypres and the front with soldiers and ammunition. Remy Siding, a group of evacuation hospitals that made priority use of this railway, was also located along this line.

't Oud Spoor (Old Railway): The most commonly used general term for the track.

De Vergeten Route (Forgotten Route): Referring to the tourist theme.
't Stretje van de Izeren Weg (Iron Road): A more archaic name for a path on an old railway track.

Vleterbeek - Wipperhoek

Highlight • Trail

Unpaved path along the Vleterbeek.

The Vleterbeek rises at the Katsberg in the municipality of Godewaarsvelde in French Flanders and flows into Belgium from Abele.

Only in the center of Poperinge does the Vleterbeek meet the Bommelaarsbeek-Hipshoekbeek and is called the Poperingevaart. At the height of the Elzendamme bridge, the Poperingevaart flows into the Yser.

Roman Diverticulum Abele

Highlight • Trail

Dirt track at Abele's school. Resting place with a beautiful view of the witness hills.

The small road along the picnic area is the route of the Roman diverticulum. This old Roman Heirweg ran from Cassel over Poperinge in the direction of Aardenburg, also called the 'Steenstraete'.

Château De Lovie Park

Highlight • Castle

A truly beautiful place! To be explored both by bike and on foot!

Excerpt: top.vlaanderen/fr/park/kasteelpark-de-lovie-poperinge
A beautifully landscaped park around a castle. Open to the public. In spring, the crocuses and a row of Japanese cherry trees are particularly eye-catching. The castle building itself is currently being renovated.

This estate is home to the non-profit organization De Lovie, which supports children, young people, and adults with intellectual disabilities in the Westhoek region.

Saint Sixtus Abbey of Westvleteren

Highlight • Religious Site

Unfortunately, you cannot visit the abbey and the brewery. The "Claustrum" is also currently closed. In this information room in the "In de Vrede" meeting center, directly opposite the abbey, the monks provide an insight into their monastic life.

You can't buy beer here. This is only possible after prior registration and order via the abbey's website.

But don't worry: you don't come for free! In the meeting center you can taste the "best beer in the world", because only here the Trappist beer from Westvleteren is served.

If you have a sweet tooth: try the "Coupe In de Vrede", prepared with delicious ice cream and Westvleteren Trappist.

In the shop you can buy Trappist cheese, Abbey cheese, Abbey pâté, Kruydekoecke, Hemnepot and many other regional specialties.
