Designed by the Finnish architect Alvar Aalto in 1966 and built about ten years later, the Church of Santa Maria Assunta of Riola di Vergato which is located on the Apennines on the Porrettana road has a unique structure with skilful use of materials such as sandstone, marble, terracotta and glass to create unique plays of light.

Palace of the Captains of the Mountain

Highlight • Historical Site

What is currently the municipal building of Vergato was built between the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries and was the seat of the Captains of the Mountain, officials appointed by the Bolognese authority, placed at the head of the government of the territory from 1414 to 1796. The palace - which is currently presents as a two-storey building, grafted onto a porticoed ground floor - it is characterized by the numerous and interesting heraldic coats of arms dating back to the IV-VI centuries; among these it is visible what is still today the coat of arms of the Municipality, depicting a boar in a swamp surrounded by two oak branches tied by a ribbon. The building was rebuilt in the post-war period, in the medieval forms that characterized the pre-existing reconstruction, designed in 1885 by Alfonso Rubbiani and the architect Tito Azzolini. In 1998 it was further enhanced thanks to the construction of four stained glass windows by the famous artist Luigi Ontani, which today decorate the Town Council Hall. The stained glass windows, of considerable artistic interest, form a microcosm of highly symbolic and evocative lights and colors: a contemporary work of art, which has a life of its own, but at the same time upgrades and enhances the architectural and cultural value of this ancient building that has been and remains one of the favorite tourist destinations for years (source: cittametropolitan.bo.it)

The real "amusement park" of Bolognese cyclists extends from the slopes of Ceretolo to the most remote recesses of the south of the province ... but this is the easiest part to reach starting from Bologna :)
