Glastonbury Market Cross

Highlight • Historical Site

Archaeology & History

The present day Market Cross that stands in Glastonbury’s High Street, ornate though it may look, replaced a much earlier and more memorable monument. The one we see today, said Charles Pooley (1877),

“at the junction of the four streets, was erected in 1846, after the design of B. Ferrey, Esq., at the instance and the cost of a private individual. It is a Gothic pinnacled structure of a simple type, with no pretensions to elaborate architectural display.”

White Spring, Glastonbury

Highlight • Natural Monument

THE BEAUTIFULLY SCULPTED GARDENS OF the Chalice Well surround Glastonbury’s most famous natural water source, the Red Spring, so called for the iron oxide it deposits in its basin. But just opposite this famous site, down a little lane at the foot of Glastonbury Tor, lies its counterpart: the White Spring.

Glastonbury Tor

Highlight • Summit

Climbing the hill, which is thought by some to be the Arthurian Avalon, rewards you with amazing views of the Somerset Levels, Dorset, Wiltshire and Wales. On its top, you can find the ruins of 15th-century St Michael's Church. Especially beautiful near sunrise or sunset, but quite windy at the top. Comfortable footwear required.

Glastonbury Tor

Highlight (Segment) • Summit

Glastonbury Tor has long since been iconic as a scenic viewpoint. The Tor is a grand tower with outstanding views out over the surrounding countryside. Nowhere is this more prevalent than half way up the Tor, where the steps lead you like a concrete snake up to the Tor. The Tor is ahead of you and Glastonbury is behind you, simply an outstanding viewpoint.

St Margaret's Chapel and Almshouses

Highlight • Religious Site

This group of buildings dates back to around the 11th Century, when Glastonbury was a major pilgrimage destination. It was at first a Hospital for up to 13 sick men with a Chapel (all paid for by Queen Margaret of Scotland).
Two rows of Men’s Almshouses replaced the Hospital in the 16th Century, but one row was demolished in the 1960s – its foundations are under the garden.
The Mary and Margaret Charity completed a large refurbishment and repair programme in 2012, including a new stone courtyard wall and disabled access WC, and a new West garden.
