St. Peter's Branch Church, Obertauern
Highlight • Religious Site
As early as 1124, a small church, the Peterskirchlein, stood at the pass summit next to the present-day Tauernfriedhof. Berthold Pürstinger, Bishop of Chiemsee and Auxiliary Bishop of Salzburg, ascended to this Peterskirchlein in the winter of 1515, enduring great cold, snow, and winds, to reconcile (re-consecrate) it. The reason is not known, but it is assumed that this new consecration became necessary due to a desecration of the church.
Twice, in 1597 and 1616, the inhabitants of the area had to complain to Prince-Archbishop Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau and Markus Sittikus von Hohenems before Archbishop Paris Graf Lodron finally had a new building erected at the current location in 1620.
This construction was carried out according to the plans of the cathedral master builder Santino Solari.
