Champtoceaux Suspended Mill

Highlight • River

Place called "le Cul du Moulin" at the foot of Champtoceaux, near the pier of the boat "La Luce" and the nautical base.
Very nice place for a stopover. Several picnic tables, toilets and a fountain which often saved me in summer :-)

The place is also notable for its hanged mill. Classified as a historical monument, this 13th century building was first presented as a river toll before being rehabilitated as a watermill. Under the pointed arches were suspended water wheels which drove millstones upstairs, hence the name hanging mill. This mill is contemporary with the medieval city of which there are vestiges on the heights.

Ruins of the Citadel of Champtoceaux

Highlight • Historical Site

The Chemin du Voinard connects the town center of Champtoceaux to the departmental road below the rocky outcrop and the Loire à Vélo. It is a path that is relatively passable by mountain bike/VTC/gravel, with a few stones, which winds along the Voinard stream.
The difficulty is in its rising part which is very steep and particularly formidable in wet weather and/or dead leaves. For the strong :-)
We will be vigilant to the ruts in the direction of the descent.
The path is popular with hikers as it leads to the old citadel. Champtoceaux, at the time Châteauceaux, was indeed originally a citadel, 2.5x larger than Carcassonne. Unfortunately destroyed in 1420, only vestiges remain. Free access.

Prieuré Saint-Jean-Baptiste

Highlight • Other

Ruins of the Saint-Jean-Baptiste priory, belonging to the Marmoutier abbey, created in the 11th century
The ruins visible on the site date from the modifications carried out in the 15th century; the priory collected rights on the mills and tolls on the Loire.
The Saint-Jean-Baptiste Priory was burned down by the infernal columns in March 1794.

Magnificent view of the river. On the other hand, it is worth it because the climb is steep.

November 11, 2025,"Mollo sur le vélo !" 😁 Du Cul du moulin à la Coulée de la Luce par la Bridonnière et la Citadelle de Champtoceaux
Take it easy on the bike in the hamlet of La Bridonnière, a sign well-known to cyclists 😉! Not on my bike today, but a leisurely hike along the banks and hillsides of the Loire at Champtoceaux. Perhaps less pompous than the emissary from Baghdad (!) received here by Pepin the Short in 768, and without any trouble leaving, unlike …
