Ruins of the Bismarckhöhe Sanatorium

Highlight • Historical Site

Sanatorium Bismarckhöhe / Sanatorium Finkenwalde / Kinderheim Bismarckhöhe from Hökendorf (now Bukowe-Klęskowo) on the extension of Mączna Street (German Mühlenstraße). In 1900, the medical doctor Lindtner bought land from the municipality of Hökendorf with the intention of opening a clinic-sanatorium. Carl Kelm supervised the design and construction of the Sanatorium Finkenwalde complex, and in 1902 the complex was opened. It consisted of a winter and summer pavilion connected with each other by a corridor leading to a large, glass dining room. It also had electricity, and the specialists employed there were among the most respected in their profession. From 1910 the sanatorium was called "Bismarckhöhe". During World War I (1914-1918) it was closed, but after its end, patients returned to it for four years. In 1923-29, the building, which was converted into a municipal orphanage, operated under the name "Kinderheim Bismarckhöhe". In 1926 the facades of the buildings were rebuilt, the facades were plastered, all ornaments and embellishments disappeared. In 1929, an old people's home was built there and the concrete wheelchair driveway built in 1930 has been preserved to this day. In 1937, a motorway was built in the immediate vicinity of the complex. The last trace of "Bismarckhöhe" is the address book from 1943. Unfortunately, the only information is that the owner was the city of Stettin at the time.
The buildings of the "Bismarckhöhe" survived the hostilities of March 1945, but at the turn of the 1940s and 1950s they were demolished by the inhabitants. The entrance gate posts (one is still standing), the already mentioned driveway for carriages and fragments of the building's foundations have remained to this day.

A spectacular view of Emerald Lake. Right behind the barrier there is a vertical slope. Better be careful.

Swedish Stone

Highlight • Natural Monument

The Swedish Stone Nature Monument is located in the north-western part of the Szczecin Landscape Park "Puszcza Bukowa". It is located in the Stare Czarnowo commune, in the Gryfino poviat. It is situated by Droga Chojnowska, near the fork of the yellow Trail to the Swedish Stone from Szczecin's Podjuchy housing estate and the green Trail of Woja Żelisław from the Zdroje Forest Park.

Szwedzki Kamień was entered into the register of nature monuments by the Resolution of the Stare Czarnowo Commune Council of October 25, 2004. It has an impressive size, a circumference of 970 cm and a height of 170 cm. This boulder is a plagioclase-biotite gneis, pink-gray with a pegmatite vein. It has deep frost cracks. Its name refers to a nearby mill that was used by the Swedes during the Thirty Years' War. They used it to make gunpowder. Despite the fact that the place changed its owners and its destiny later, the name of the Swedish Mill was adopted, and the erratic boulder was given the name of the Swedish Stone.

Swedish Mill Ruins

Highlight • Historical Site

These are the remains of a former grain mill, whose history dates back over 700 years. The first owners were the Cistercians from Kołbacz (and who else ;). Subsequent owners were: the Swedes - during the Thirty Years' War they turned the mill into a powder mill - which was destroyed by fire, Hans Blaurock and his heirs in the 12th - 19th centuries (again as a grain mill), Friedrich Jaeckel from 1838 who started production here paper and bags for the nearby Stern cement plant, and finally Johannes Burmeister - in 1880 he founded a restaurant here which attracted crowds of tourists and the place became the main tourist center in the forest.
The history of this place ends abruptly in 1944, when, as a result of war, some of the buildings were destroyed and then the whole thing was gradually devastated, until it reached its present state, i.e. a few remains in the form of: stairs, a dam embankment and a rotting valve, an overgrown mill pond and foundations and basement vaults.

Jaeckel Family Graves

Highlight • Historical Site

Two tombstones and a metal cross in the middle of the forest. This is the private "cemetery" of the Jaeckel family. It is located on a small hill next to the remains of the Swedish Mill. There is a commemorative tombstone of Otto Jaeckel (the letter "l" was forgotten during the renovation of the inscription), who died during World War I in France, and a much more damaged tombstone of Friederike Jaeckel. Next to it, a few years ago, someone erected a tall metal Evangelical cross.
The Jaeckel family owned the Swedish Mill in the 19th century. Friedrich Jaeckel bought it in 1838 and started the production of paper and bags for the nearby Stern cement plant. The Cistercians from Kołbacz already in the 13th century used the waters of the Chojnówka stream flowing here to turn mill wheels. During the Thirty Years' War, the mill was used to produce gunpowder by the Swedes - hence the name Swedish Mill preserved to this day.
In 1880, Johannes Baumeister bought it and created a popular restaurant there. After the war, the undeveloped buildings fell into ruin and were demolished. Today only their foundations can be found.
Graves:
Friederike Jäckel (11/11/1790 – 2/10/1871)
Otto Jaeckel (17/12/1897 - 18/06/1918) - commemorative tombstone of the owner's son (Otto Jaeckel), who died in France

Chojna Hillfort

Highlight • Historical Site

Also called the Klęskowo stronghold, it is located in the Beech Forest on the Chojna hill with a height of 74 m above sea level. On its flattened and elongated top, we can see an early medieval stronghold from the 9th-12th centuries. Poorly visible, damaged embankments, 300 m long, surround the peak with an area of 0.75 ha, covered with pine and beech.
According to legend, there was a powerful castle of robber knights here, attacking all travelers, plundering them mercilessly. The cursed town and its crew sank into the ground.

Groński Boulder

Highlight • Natural Monument

Erratic boulder, grey-pink gneiss, medium-grained, detached block with a visible hole for placing an explosive charge. Boulder circumference 12.3 m, height above ground level 1.4 m.

Until 1957, the boulder was called the Świętochowski Stone or Bolkowy Głaz (-Stone), in honor of Bolesław Krzywousty. On August 23, 1959, PTTK placed a marble commemorative plaque on the boulder dedicated to Stanisław Groński, in 1976 it was changed to a metal one, with the inscription: In memory of Stanisław Groński, leading Polish mountaineer, Pioneer of tourism in the Szczecin Region. He died in the Mont Blanc massif in August 1957.
