The old town hall stands on Hans-Thiel-Platz in Zellhausen and was built in 1830 as a red sandstone building. Initially, it served as a local school for 122 children with two teachers' apartments. In 1929, it was converted into the town hall.
The old town hall and school building also bears the Zellhausen coat of arms – the pine cone. The coat of arms is derived from the Zellhausen "Schoofplickern" (literally "shoof"). "Schoof" is a Hessian word for pine cone. This cone-picking was a seasonal activity that continued until around 1955. Cones were picked from the treetops (using special crampons).
The town hall, in need of renovation, was then modernized inside and out and housed, among other things, the registry office and the Mainhausen History and Local History Society. 🚴♂️

Today's Chapel Square was once an important crossroads. In the 16th century, a small statue house stood here. It was dedicated to St. Wendelin (patron saint of farmers) and St. Leonard, who were depicted as sculptures. These figures date from 1515 and are now housed in the "Old Sacristy" of the basilica. The foundation stone for the chapel was laid on April 27, 1678. The new building of the present chapel was erected in 1885, with a simple plastered exterior and the Baroque portal of the abbey church from 1722.
