The market square in Starogard Gdański is the oldest part of the city. In the Middle Ages, on the left bank of the Wierzyca River, there was a farm and a village that belonged to Piotr Święca. After selling them to the Teutonic Knights, around 1305, they began to mark out the area for the development of a fortified settlement.
