Kettwig's Historic Old Town

Highlight • Historical Site

Here you roll over the Ruhr bridge in Essen Kettwig. Out of the city you are super fast in the countryside. The city of Kettwig is really worth a stop. Old half-timbered houses, winding streets and all sorts of opportunities to stop in any case to take a break. Food Kettwig is definitely one of the most beautiful cities in the pot!

Lower Church Steps (Essen-Kettwig)

Highlight • Historical Site

The church staircase ends at Tuchmacherplatz. It was owned by the church in the Middle Ages and was not expanded until 1850 with proper steps and railings. The staircase was one of the four old fire lanes between the Ruhr and the Oberdorf. To the right and left are houses, of which house no. 4 is particularly noteworthy from a historical point of view; it was referred to as "Bacharach's house" as early as 1368. A family from Bacharach lived there, who cultivated wine for the Werden abbot in the area of today's “Am Weinberg” street. Next to house no. 5 there is the Kettwig “night watchman”, a handcrafted blacksmith work by Bernhard Nicolai.

Scheidt Cloth Factory (Uferpalais)

Highlight • Historical Site

As early as around 1800, when the first spinning machines, still powered by horse-drawn yokes, were procured for the Scheidt Brothers cloth factory, the factory owners were already planning a new factory on the Ruhr. The Göpel operation was unsuccessful. As early as 1804 it was reported that several horses and oxen were driven to death in the Göpel.
A factory on the Ruhr was able to use the water power of the river course, but it was only realized in 1837 by Julius Scheidt. Chimneys on old factory views refer to the use of steam engines. A high factory building was erected parallel to the Ruhr, which now dominated the south-western view of Kettwig. After major fires in 1880 and 1902, the partially destroyed buildings were rebuilt. A hydroelectric power station equipped with three turbines was added to the south side with the reconstruction of 1902. Due to the expansion in the decades up to 1910, the factory plant stretched up the slope to the Ruhrstraße, including the Villa Scheidt (Ruhrstraße 91), enthroned high above the Ruhr.

Today there are condominiums in the building.

Saarner Ruhraue Nature Reserve

Highlight (Segment) • Natural

The area of Ruhraue in Mülheim consists of the Saar Rügen in the north and the nature reserve Mendener Ruhraue in the south and accompanies the Ruhr for about 3.5 kilometers along its course. The northern part is located west of the Ruhr, the southern east.

Large parts of the floodplain are taken up by grassland and intersected by water surfaces in the form of old bodies of water, a stream and artificially created waters. Alluvial forests line many of the banks, they are largely responsible for the value of the FFH area. In a pasture riparian forest, a gray heron colony has settled. You can discover the tranquility on foot as well as by bike or from a ship of the White Fleet. Particularly popular is the Ruhr beach north of the Mendener bridge, which is exempted from the FFH area. It includes a playground, a ball playground and barbecue areas.
