Church of Santa Maria de Robines

Highlight • Religious Site

It's nice to sit outside under plane trees with a view of the Church of Santa Maria de Robines.
We ate delicious and cheap at Can Jan, the 3-course menu including a glass of wine for € 12.

Bodegas Oliver Winery, Binissalem

Highlight • Structure

The greatest art treasures of this community are undoubtedly the buildings. The majority of the buildings are built with the Binissalem stone from the area. You can also visit wine cellars. The unity of these buildings and cellars give an impressive overall picture, starting from the church Nostra Senyora de Rubines. Rubines was also the name of the city of Binissalem in the period from the 13th to the 16th century.
Binissalem is the Mallorcan capital of wine. The wine from this region is protected by the denomination Denominación de Origen. According to documents, wine was produced here in the 14th century. The wine production increased considerably in the 19th century, until the phylloxera from America had been introduced to France and destroyed there and around 1900 many vineyards. Almost all grapevines fell victim to these pests. Only after the introduction of the resistant American vine did viticulture begin to revive. Since the root of the American vine is resistant to the phylloxera, such as the leaves of the European vine, the American rootstock and the European precious rice are grafted together and defy thus the common phylloxera.
On the 1,200 hectares of cultivated land, which are for the most part in this municipality, today high-quality wines are cultivated. The vineyards with clay soil lying above lime are located at 250 to 300 meters above sea level.
The most important grape varieties and their tasting characteristics are,
Manto Negro and Tinto Fino.
The church square and the appearance of the place are dominated by the church Nostra Senyora de Robines. Its bell tower is considered the landmark of the city. The foundation dates from the 15th century, but the construction was only completed in 1908 in the Gothic Revival style.
A sight of the city is the gate Cas Capità Bissó. It is a magnificent gate that once belonged to a mansion. The former home of the writer Llorenç Villalonga is also visited. It is called Can Sabater.
