Sint Christinakerk Eijsden

Highlight • Religious Site

The church served as a setting for the television series ‘Dagboek van een herdershond’ in 1978.

It is a Roman Catholic church with a three-aisled nave from the 16th century and partly, like the choir, from 1851. The tower dates from the 14th century. The 17th-century main altar (mensa Gothic) with an 18th-century exhibition throne is special. In addition, on the Maria side altar there is a simple exhibition throne (18th century). Furthermore, in the sacristy there is an oak cabinet with a dresser, also 18th century. The single-manual organ was made around 1855 by Pereboom and Leyser. The church bell with a diameter of over a meter was cast in 1617 by N. Brochard and A. Richault. Until around 1850, the church was used for approximately 200 years as a simultaneous church for both Catholic and Protestant worship.

Basement and moated main building in Maasland Renaissance style, consisting of a rectangular west and south wing, which enclose a square, partly paved castle square in a hook shape. The castle is built in red brick interrupted by marlstone bands and rests with the castle square on a substructure of brick and bluestone blocks.

As such, the castle was built or completed in 1636, five years after the marriage of Arnold de la Margelle to Margaretha Anna Francisca van Bocholtz. This event is commemorated by a facade stone above the gate on the south side of the south facade, where the front of the castle is located. In archive documents from 1633 present at the castle, there is mention of an architect Servais Charles, who may have been the builder of the castle. Traces of construction in the foundation in the form of a fire layer approx. 2.75 meters below the castle square give rise to the suspicion that the castle was built on the site of an older building.

De Zaagmolen Watermill

Highlight • Monument

'De Zaagmolen' located in the hamlet Laag Caestert was in its time, in terms of building and location, the most beautiful watermill on the Voer. The mill was once used to saw wood using water power. From this function, which must have occurred before 1800, it retained the name "Zaagmolen'.

The mill with the house consisted of a high brick building, with marlstone along the water, bluestone window and door frames and covered with a tiled saddle roof. A special appearance was given by the small barred windows set in Namur stone and provided with shutters at man's height. A facade stone mentions the year 1729.
As a result of renovations and the installation of a turbine with turbine room, much of the original character was lost.

In the 18th century, the mill was owned by the counts De Geloes. In 1834, Count Constantin de Geloes is still mentioned as the owner. Four years later, he sold the mill with accessories to the Liège banker Gerard Nagelmaekers. Nagelmaekers remained in possession of the "Zaagmolen' until 1858. He then sold the mill to the tanners Gebr. Louis and Charles Coopman. Louis Coopman had a tannery in Maastricht. Charles Coopman's tannery was located in Eijsden on the Diepstraat. The couple undoubtedly ground oak bark or tanning stones at that time.

In 1880, the mill with house and storage space was assigned to Charles Coopman during a division of the estate. Shortly after 30 May 1890, the day on which the supervisor of the provincial water board had placed a gauge at the mill, Coopman had the water wheel replaced by a turbine that was fed with water through a brick canal. However, no permission had been requested for the construction. On 13 August 1890, a supervisor visited the mill again and drew up a report of the changes made. In 1898, Coopman had the mill building demolished and rebuilt in 1899, for which no permission was requested either. In the same year, the Provincial Executive nevertheless granted a permit for the unlawful changes. In it the mill is called a bark mill.

Eijsden Castle

Highlight • Castle

Eijsden Castle is a manor house with a farm. Before today's castle was built in 1636, there was already a fortified house, the so-called Caestertburg. It is a particularly beautiful castle, built in the Maasland Renaissance style. However, the castle is privately owned, you can only visit the park.

Aon 't Bat Eatery

Highlight • Cafe

One of the most popular places for tourists on the Maas and Eijsden. And the terrace and the location on a piece of grass with a few seats in front of the terrace on the Maas have a lot to do with it. Beware: according to a local, on nice days it is often already queuing here from the morning with many visitors from French-speaking Belgium that is also nearby.

Here lies the ferry boat that mainly takes tourists and day trippers from Eijsden to Ternaaien and vice versa. There are literally tens of thousands of them per year and this from the Easter holidays onwards. Of course, here, just like elsewhere in this walking area on the Meuse, you can see Belgium on the other side, more specifically Ternaaien.

The name of the ferry: "Cramignon", like the folk dance about which you will find an information board and sculpture on the central square.
