Pollis Mill

Highlight • Monument

The Pollismolen is located on the Itterbeek in a beautiful nature reserve. The mill was first mentioned in 1296, when it was still called the “Weyerberch mill”. In the 16th century the name changed to the “Schelenmolen” and in 1633 to “the mill at Pölles”. Hence the current name “Pollismolen”. It is an undershot watermill on the Wijshagerbeek in Opitter. In 1830 the mill was still made of wood and clay. Later a stone mill was built. The mill was shut down in 1961 and in 1970 the mill wheel was set on fire by children. In 1981 the mill was purchased by the municipality of Bree and converted into a holiday resort. An extensive restoration followed, during which the mill was brought back into working condition. In 1994, the mill and its surroundings obtained protected status. In 2010, a restaurant with banquet rooms and a hotel was built in one of the nearby buildings. The mill grinds buckwheat for the restaurant and there is an old baking oven in the café. In addition to the mill museum, a forest and pipe museum has been set up. There is a bio garden and a forest learning trail in the nearby area.

A boardwalk leads across the moor. The water, however, isn't inviting for swimming.

The most northerly bivouac zone, Itter, is situated on the steep edge of Limburg. The terrain is therefore sloping, so it is handy that there is a spacious tent platform on which you can place your tent level. You will camp here in a shady environment of birch and oak, but it is mainly the coarse pines that predominate around the bivouac zone. On one side you have a view between the trees over fields and meadows

Due to the very fire-sensitive location of both bivouac zones, it is strictly forbidden to make a wood fire, it is a criminal offense. Respect this wood fire ban as a guest in Duinengordel! You can use a small gas or fuel burner for cooking, unless exceptional measures are in place due to extreme drought. Do not leave a trace on these natural places, as always in a bivouac zone, you take waste back with you, therefore no waste bins have been placed. Read the bivouac regulations on site.
