Grotenhoutbos Lake

Highlight (Segment) • Lake

The Grotenhoutbos is one of the oldest forests in the Kempen
Grotenhout, also called the Gierlese forest, is located southwest of Turnhout on the border of the municipalities of Lille and Vosselaar. With its 300 hectares, it is one of the largest and oldest forests in the Kempen. The area contains approximately 100 hectares of oak forest over a hundred years old as well as beech, ash and alder forests.
The alternation of a rich subsoil with poor grasslands ensures a wide range of plants. Muskwort, wood anemone, spreading-leaved goldweed, slender primrose, blue knot and ground star are just a few examples of the more than 360 common species.

Warandeplas

Highlight • Lake

The Warandeplas is an extensive body of water that lies between the forests of Rollekensbergen and the Visbeek valley, an extremely valuable and extremely varied nature reserve. It is a beautiful location for walking, cycling and enjoying nature. There is even a zone where your dog can freely enter the water. In 2016 a sheep grid was placed around the Warandeplas in function of the grazing by sheep. In this way variation is ensured in the structure of the landscape with a mosaic of forest, shrubs and open areas.

Achtzaligheden Tree

Highlight • Natural Monument

The Achtzamehedenboom is a coarse fly near the Rollekensberg in the Lilse woods. The tree is known for its capricious shape. The Achtzamehedenboom has been a tourist attraction for years. Named after the eight beatitudes of Christ, the tree gets its name from the fact that it originally had eight trunks. Just before the Second World War, however, one diseased trunk would have been sawn off, in order to prevent further contamination of the tree. According to another story, poachers sawed off the tribe to take revenge on a forest ranger who had caught them earlier. His exact age could not be determined with certainty. It is estimated that it dates from around 1850. The tree was already mentioned in a work about the most remarkable trees in Belgium from 1910.

Blommerschot Chapel

Highlight • Religious Site

Chapel dedicated to Our Lady of Lourdes.
In 1900 Leon de Nevel and wife Delphina Cools had a neo-Gothic family chapel built in Blommerschot in memory of their parents August Cools and Maria Van de Brande. It is a small brick structure with a wooden canopy and green painted door. Because it is a private chapel, there is no public devotion.
