Great natural landscape at the former quarry lakes with many water birds.

Until the end of the 19th century, the Neckar Valley between Köngen and Wendlingen was dominated by meadows. It was not until the middle of the 20th century that mechanical gravel mining completely changed the face of the Neckar Valley. In the Wendlingen area there were up to 20 hectares of open water and the large Pfauhäuser quarry lake alone was 35 hectares in size. After the gravel deposits had been exploited, more and more quarry lakes were filled in again. There were also plans to build over the Wernau quarry lakes. As early as 1974, the German Association for the Protection of Birds (DBV, as the NABU was still called at the time) submitted an application to designate the Wernau quarry lakes as a nature reserve after more than 200 species of birds had been identified there over the years. The nature reserve ordinance was issued in June 1981. The management of the nature reserve was officially transferred to the DBV by the Stuttgart Regional Council. In March 1992, the directly adjacent Neckarwasen nature reserve was designated. The protected area thus increased to 45.4 hectares and has been completely managed by NABU since then.

A car test track belonging to Daimler AG (formerly Mercedes-Benz AG) is located in the middle of the nature reserve. In March 1996, talks began between NABU and Daimler with the aim of outsourcing the test track. In November 2006, NABU state chairman Dr. Stefan Rösler again turned to Dieter Zetsche, CEO of Daimler AG, with the request to finally abandon the test track at the Wernau quarry lakes. Zetsche promised to search for alternatives as quickly as possible. With the construction of the test track in Immendingen, the test track in Wernau will be replaced in the future.
