Aronst Hoek Nature Reserve

Highlight • Natural

There are several entrances to Aronst Hoek, but despite the fact that it is completely bleached, this discolored information board at the entrance via the Gete, the Motte and the water mill tells everything about the area.

As written: "Alongside the confluence of the Gete and the Melsterbeek lies the flood valley of Aronst Hoek. Broad thorn hedges and wooded edges surround the semi-natural, flowery grasslands, interspersed with swampy bushes, metre-high reed beds and valley forests with a jungle character. A shallow clay layer makes the soil impenetrable for water. This creates the typical wet bowl soils in the winter. In the lowest part of the area, a large shallow pond was created by stopping the drainage and raising the dikes. In addition to the floristic importance, in which the pool window is the crowning glory in the Aronst Hoek also offers a home to rare birds, with a rich flora including pipe beetle, wild roses and strawberry clover: curlew, mockingbird and stonechat breed here annually, while in winter great egrets hibernate among the hundreds of ducks such as common teal, gadwall and tufted duck ."

Path Along the Gete River

Highlight • Trail

Very nice path along the Gete where you pass, perhaps without knowing it, archaeological sites and heritage (the motte, the old water mill) and finally brings you to a grazed part of the Aronst Hoek nature reserve. Totally recommended, but realize that the emphasis here is more on nature than easy recreation.

Geetbets Watermill

Highlight • Monument

If you walk here you wouldn't immediately say it, but the house and outbuildings you see here contain / are a water mill. The bridge over the Gete (you can cross it but not all the way because it is private property) shows the year on a stone near the water.

The water mill can also be reached on the other side via a private road at the end of the molenstraat where the building was assigned number 11. The water mill is built over a bypass of the Grote Gete with a metal center wheel under the building. You can read all about this water mill infrastructure and its long history here: molenechos.org/molen.php?nummer=973

Description on the site of real estate about the heritage object: inventaris.onroerenderfgoed.be/erfgoedobjecten/200148

Can be viewed by appointment with the owner according to Molenechos.

At the time of our visit, this was the only but also the highest construction from which you can look over this part of Aronst Hoek. He stands at the entrance gates of the paths that pass through the areas where the Galoway cattle graze. Finally, you will find an information board about these beautiful and useful grazers. The staircase of the watchtower is steep but there is some fall protection.

Forest

This is the location of the former moated bailey that once stood here and the "official entrance" to the forest and walks. If you follow the beautiful short (audio) walk with the story about the end of the county of Loon after the destruction of the castle that stood here and the beautiful flora of the forest, this is, as it were, "the entrance" to the forest. The longer Warande Motte walk from Natuurpunt (see below) also enters the forest here. Here you will also find information boards about the forest and the castle, seats, a kind of gate and the "flag" of the county of Loon.

Around the turn of the century, a small chapel was erected near the castle ruins that once stood on the site of the current Warandebos, at the intersection of the Kerkvoetweg and the Dorpveldweg. On the corner opposite the chapel, a rising pedunculate oak was planted as a corner tree. A sign is attached to the facade of the chapel with the inscription 'The last defenders of the County of Loon fell here in 1365'. The inscription recalls the siege and destruction of the 14th-century castle. Immovable Heritage Inventory 2024: Rummen Castle, id.erfgoed.net/erfgoedobjecten/303934

Kasteel Terlenen

Highlight • Castle

Castle Terlenen, Grazen

The Terlenen castle site, on the border of Grazen and Rummen (Geetbets), is a well-preserved example of a 19th-century manor farm. An extensive farm, brewery and distillery complex leans against the house, which was conceived as a country house from 1820. Until the French Revolution, the Terlenen farm was part of the extensive possessions of the Cistercian abbey of Oriente (ca. 1234-1798). The name seems to refer to a local knight family. It is said that the site was almost completely rebuilt and expanded in successive phases from 1820 to ca. 1900 following heavy damage by the French troops.
