Hermitage of Our Lady of Erola

Highlight • Religious Site

From the hermitage of Erola, news has been received since 1571.

It is nestled in a beautiful chestnut hamlet halfway through the Sanctuary of Sant Segimon.

Destroyed by a fire in the middle of the 17th century, the hermitage was rebuilt by Fr. Onofre, Hermit of Sant Segimon.

During the Seven Years' War, in 1833 and during the Civil War in 1936 the church was doubly burned and defiled. The faithful of Viladrau restored it in 1942.

The habitacle on the first floor was used by the hermitages of Sant Segimon from November 1 to April 1, when the cold made life difficult for the Sanctuary.

The Virgin of Erola enters the tradition of the virgins found. In this case, according to the legend, he was found by a bull of Can Gad, who was buried. On the porch of the hermitage a circle and a cross of river pebbles mark the place of discovery. For this reason, the festival was celebrated on December 8th (traditionally this day celebrates the birth of the Virgin Mary). The Virgin was invoked by mothers, perhaps in accordance with her name, to protect children from smallpox.

During the Carlist War the Virgin was hidden in the chestnut strain to preserve it from the looting. Years later, when recovering it, the wood image was in very bad state. The present is a faithful replica of the old one.

Sant Miquel dels Barretons Chapel

Highlight • Religious Site

16th century chapel located right on the cliff, above the sanctuary of Sant Segimon, in one of the most visited places in Montseny.
Legend has it that its name is given by the fact that the pilgrims who came to the chapel left the hat as a votive offering. Other sources explain that it comes from small straw hats that were kept in the chapel and that cured headaches.

Matagalls (1697 m)

Highlight • Summit

el Matagalls is an iconic hiking mountain in Catalonia, visited for generations.
Its summit can be reached by several routes, all with their own charm. The easy access of del Coll Formic means that there is currently a considerable flood of visitors of all kinds who degrade the environment in a worrying way.
It was the starting point of the legendary resistance march "Matagalls - Montserrat" created in 1972 by the Gràcia Hiking Center but, due to the environmental impact around this peak, since 1998 the start has been made at Coll Formic to move from Brull to 2015.

Chapel of Mercy

Highlight • Religious Site

Known popularly as the Mercy, this chapel located in the urban center was built at the time the town expanded and originated the neighborhood name of the Mercy.

Documented in 1603.

The entrance to the chapel is made up of a large and elegant atrium. Inside, presided over by Our Lady of Sorrows, the chapel keeps the images of the most linked saints to the parish. It is worth mentioning the image of Saint Domenech Savio, the youngest non-martyr saint in the Catholic Church, wearing a jacket and a curve.

Attached to the Chapel was located the cemetery of the town until the year 1899.

Church of Sant Martí de Viladrau

Highlight • Religious Site

The first church is documented in 898 as a parish within the domain of the castle of Taradell. Renewed in 1082 was consecrated by the bishop of Vic, Berenguer Sunifred.

At this time it corresponds the central nave that was enlarged, with side chapels, and probably the current bell tower, during the XVI and XVII centuries. Finally in the eighteenth century the facade is wrapped.

Of the Romanesque church there are only, near the baptismal font, two mid-point arcades from the 12th century that correspond to an ancient atrium or galilee.
