Meteora UNESCO site

Highlight • Religious Site

One of the most visited and well-known sites in mainland Greece is that of the Meteora monasteries, the striking Orthodox religious buildings built on top of large sandstone panettone. The town of Kalambaka is the perfect base for discovering the rolling hills on which the monasteries stand. Only six of the twenty-four monasteries declared UNESCO heritage in 1988 are still inhabited (7 can be visited).

East of the Pindus Mountains, mighty sandstone cliffs rise to a height of approximately 500 meters. 24 monasteries were once built on their summits. Monks and nuns still live in six of them today. These monasteries are now UNESCO World Heritage sites and are often referred to as "floating monasteries" because they appear almost suspended in fog or low clouds.
