Het Anker Brewery

Highlight • Pub

Priest! There is beer everywhere. But it tastes best in a place with real tradition. “Het Anker” is one of the oldest breweries in Belgium. In 1471, the Beguines began brewing beer here - for purely medical reasons, of course. Because Charles the Bold had decreed that the beer brewed for the infirmary "for the Beguines and their officials" was free of consumption taxes and duties.

Today the brewery is owned by the Van Breedam family - now in the 5th generation!

Our tip: Try a glass of "Maneblusser", a blond beer of 5.8% vol. with a light citrus aroma and a fine aftertaste, brewed using the traditional top fermentation method.

Why is it called that? On the night of January 27-28, 1687, the moon cast its shine on the spire of St. Rombouts, which was shrouded in mist. "Fire, the tower is burning!" shouted a drunk. The alarm bell rang everyone from their sleep. But when they were at the church to save the house of God, the moon shone gently through the haze. Since then the people of Mechelen have been called "Maneblusser", or "moon extinguishers".

Beguinage Church Mechelen

Highlight • Religious Site

The Beguinage Church is a true treasure trove with a rich collection of paintings. In addition, there are also many 17th century sculptures to be seen. The altar, the pulpit and, a little later, the communion bench date from the same period. Accessibility
You can visit the church for free.
The church is partially wheelchair accessible. The access path and the path around the church are made of cobblestones and are uneven. The entrance to the church is threshold-free and is via three sufficiently wide double doors.

Small Beguinage, Mechelen

Highlight • Historical Site

The Klein Begijnhof is a court in the center of the Belgian city of Mechelen. This first beguinage in Mechelen dates from the early 13th century. In 1259 the city council granted permission to build a beguinage outside the city walls (the Great Beguinage), but old and deficient beguines continued to live here. At that time, three entrance gates closed off the square, but have now disappeared. Source Wikipedia

Refuge of Sint Truiden

Highlight • Historical Site

The abbots of abbeys and monasteries had early refuges or refuges built in the walled towns. They can stay there if they are in the city or in transit. In times of war, the refuges also provide protection. The refuge of the Abbey of Sint-Truiden was founded in the 16th century by the Benedictine abbey of Sint-Truiden. Smart, because that way they can keep in touch with the archbishop in Mechelen. Today this beautiful building is part of the Archbishop's Palace. The buildings are connected by a covered bridge. The Archbishop's Palace is not open to visitors.

Starling pots have been incorporated into the graceful tower in which starlings build their nests. Until the 19th century, starling was a true delicacy.
