Wedel did not ignore this enthusiasm either and erected a monument to Schiller on the south side of the Rolandkirche by erecting a large boulder.
The then still independent community of Schulau was also determined not to leave the Schiller honor to Wedel alone, but to erect its own memorial. This is richly documented in the Wedel city archive. A committee met months beforehand and discussed the festival program for May 9, 1905. One has to acknowledge that the Schulauers really planned generously, and the public spirit was impressive. The small square between today's passage and the Kaland drugstore, where the monument still stands today, was chosen as the site of the monument. As a guiding principle, the verse from "Wilhelm Tell" was placed at the foot of the monument, which fully corresponded to the elation of the German bourgeoisie to live in a united kingdom: "Be united, united, united!"
