Watchtower of Xeraco

Highlight • Monument

The tower is one of the thirteen coastal surveillance towers whose construction was ordered in 1575 by Vespasiano Gonzaga, Viceroy of Valencia, on the orders of Philip II, to organize the defense of the Valencian coast against attacks by the Turks and Berbers. Mainly pirates who landed on the coasts, invaded, destroyed crops, looted towns and took prisoners.

The defense system was regulated by decrees that came into force in the 16th and 17th centuries. With this particular tower it was possible to control the area between the Alfándec Tower in Tabernes de Valldigna and the now missing tower in the Grao de Gandía. The historic tower is located on the right bank of the mouth of the Vaca River.
