Malpaís de Güímar

Highlight (Segment) • Natural Monument

The Spanish word Malpaís means "wasteland" in German, but that doesn't really matter. A Malpaís is a special, volcanic landscape: here you can still clearly see the original lava flows and an incredible number of pioneer plants grow between the rocks.

From the vantage point at the foot of the volcanic cone of the Montaña Grande you have a perfect view of the Malpaís Güímar and the waters of the Atlantic Ocean.

Malpaís of Güímar

Highlight • Natural Monument

This hiking area is absolutely fantastic and highly recommended. The trails are constantly changing, sometimes bumpy, over stones, with steep and deep ascents and descents, and even black sand beaches. However, they are all manageable. Hiking poles are recommended.

Short circuit from Guimar, a small fishing village in the middle of the Malpais and the natural park.

A large parking lot with a great view raises expectations. And these expectations are met.
Volcanic landscape, sparse vegetation, the Montaña Grande and the Montaña de la Mar, as well as the impressive coastline gave us great moments.

Headgear, sturdy shoes and water supplies are recommended.

Nice walk easy to access for everyone, bring good shoes walking on lava stones don't do it in tap shoes 😂😂

So I walked the route. So I can confirm that it's medium difficult, but for me it's more because of the length. Also: rub it in well. The sun is already beating down badly. A very nice route, it was fun and when I'm a little fitter I'll run it again, this time with enough sunscreen. :)

Spring temperatures on Tenerife. Only in the accommodation it is colder than at home in wintry Tyrol. 😂 To acclimatize, a hike through the fascinating lava fields of Malpais de Guimar. Already ten thousand years old, although they look as if they were still fresh. The bike will be unpacked tomorrow and then we'll get going. 🚴🏼
