Historic Ruhr Lock, Mülheim an der Ruhr

Highlight • Monument

Coal mining has been in operation in Mülheim an der Ruhr since 1460. The transport of the excavated material upstream was only possible with the completion of this lock in 1780. Despite manual operation, a ship was sluiced every 10 to 15 minutes at peak times. In 1927 - after the construction of the Kahlenbergwehr - the level of the Ruhr had increased by 1.50 meters.

The Kahlenberg hydropower plant is one of two hydropower plants in Mülheim an der Ruhr. After the First World War, the coal mined in the Ruhr area was disbursed as reparation to Belgium and France and therefore alternative sources of energy became important. In 1927, the Kahlenberg hydropower plant, built from Ruhr sandstone, was put into operation. Today it works fully automatically and delivers around 20 million kilowatt hours per year.

The Dohne Island lies between the Ruhr and the lock canal. It begins at the Kahlenberg weir and the Flora bridge and extends to the Kassenberg bridge, the Broicher Schlagd and the Kahlenberg hydroelectric power station. Parts of the island belong to the Saarn-Mendener Ruhraue nature reserve.

Villa Josef Thyssen

Highlight • Historical Site

The Villa Josef Thyssen is a neo-baroque building in the city of Mülheim. It is located in the landscaped Thyssenpark directly on the towpath of the Ruhr. In the park there are old trees and a pond, which at that time served as a water supply for a local cotton mill. This park used to be the home garden of the Josef Thyssen family. It is open to the public, but unfortunately the premises of the villa are not.

The neo-baroque villa was built in 1898 by Josef Thyssen (1844-1915), August Thyssen's younger brother, as a representative family residence on the site of the Troost cotton factory that had previously been located there. The still existing factory building bordered on the new building and served as an outbuilding. In 1877, Josef Thyssen moved to Mülheim to join his brother August's company in Mülheim. As early as 1880 he married, like his brother before him, a Mülheim entrepreneur's daughter: Klara Bagel (1856-1918), sister of the print shop owner Julius Bagel and also the builder of a representative entrepreneur's villa.

While the entrance side of the villa, built according to plans by the renowned Berlin architects Kayser & von Grossheim, is on Dohne Street, the slope of the land towards the Ruhr and the mill pond made it possible for the factory to build a terrace with impressive substructures. However, the belvedere on the roof surrounded by a balustrade is only an illusion. Each facade of the villa is individually designed. The floor plan is laid out schematically over a square grid. The former representation rooms were arranged around a central hall. The utility rooms were in the basement.

The villa is now used as an office building, the park has been part of the public Ruhr park since the Mülheim State Garden Show, but mostly still contains its old stock of plants.

Mülheim an der Ruhr City Marina

Highlight • Structure

There's a large ice cream parlor right next to the city harbor, and you can also sit on the steps by the Ruhr River. Even from the Schlossbrücke (Castle Bridge), you can enjoy a beautiful view of the city harbor.
