The town hall from 1877, which served until 1909, is of architectural value due to its application of the neo-baroque style. On December 27, 1905, a competition was held for a design for a new town hall. The design by the 25-year-old architect Jan Stuivinga was awarded the first prize. This design was elaborated and in 1908 a whole new town hall on Het Rond was realized.
In October 1976 a fierce fire destroyed part of the town hall. The entire top floor went up in flames. In 1977 it was decided to start a new building at the same time as the restoration of the town hall. Design by architect J. Lengkeek, the construction of the new part of the town hall started in 1982 and completed in 1984.
