View of the Seven Sisters from Seaford Head

Highlight • Beach

The Severn Sisters are a series of chalk cliffs on the southern coast of Britain.

Seaford Head is one of the best viewpoints of this classic bit of coast. It's also an important nature reserve with a wide variety of plants, birds and insects.

Do take care as there has been significant rock fall from the cliffs here recently (2024), look out for warning signs and stay away from the edges.

Seaford is a traditional seaside town with a colourful history. Once a bustling port, the town became synonymous with smuggling and wrecking in the 16th century. In fact, the people of Seaford were known as the ‘shags’ because of their enthusiasm for looting ships wrecked in the bay. These days, the town has a genteel atmosphere, plenty of food and drink spots, a fine beachfront dotted with brightly-coloured beach huts, shops, accommodation and other attractions.

The Coastguard Cottages on the cliff have been built in the 1920's, shortly after the National Coastguard Service was founded. They were put here because Cuckmere Haven was an important place for smuggling. Since they were built the cliff has retreated more then 30 meters, putting the cottages in danger.
