Na Kapelu Viewpoint

Highlight • Viewpoint

One of the two most beautiful viewpoints, showing the perfect stone beauty of the sandstone towers of the rock town of Hruboskalsk, is definitely the Na Kapela viewpoint. The viewpoint can be reached by a short detour from the popular and busy ridge trail connecting Valdštejn Castle and Hrubá Skála Castle, marked by a red tourist sign.

Hrubá Skála Castle

Highlight • Castle

Hrubá Skála chateau was built on the site of a castle first mentioned in 1353 when it was owned by Hynek of Wallenstein and was considered impregnable. It was the seat of the lordship of the same name with changing owners, including the Lords of Hasenburg, von Pernstein and, at the beginning of the 16th century, the Lords of Boskowitz. In 1515 it came to the Smiřický family of Smiřice, who had the castle rebuilt into a Renaissance chateau in the second half of the 16th century. In 1630 the Hrubá Skála manor and manor fell to the von Wallenstein family. Franz Adam von Waldstein sold both in 1821 to Johann Anton Lexa von Aehrenthal, whose grandson Alois Lexa von Aehrenthal was born at Groß-Skal Castle. During his rule, the castle was rebuilt in 1859 by Bernhard Grueber in the neo-Gothic style. It remained in the possession of Lexa-Aehrenthal until it was expropriated after the end of World War II in 1945. It was then used as a convalescent home.

Together with the castle viewpoint, it lies on the yellow-marked hiking trail from the springs near Lázní Sedmihorka to the Hrubá Skála castle.

For most hikers, an unsecured rock is not an option to take a nice photo. But there are plenty of opportunities to take great pictures at the numerous vantage points. The railings don't bother you.
