Invermark Castle

Highlight • Historical Site

There has been a castle here since the 14th century, but the current Invermark Castle is from the 16th century. It's an oblong tower that stands at the end of the Glen Esk Road at the start of the gravel track up to Loch Lee. The castle was abandoned in 1803 and is now partially ruined. You can go up to the base but there is no access inside.

Loch Lee

Highlight • Viewpoint

Loch Lee is actually a reservoir which feeds the River North Esk. It's a wild place further than the end of the road. You can ride the gravel track on the northern shore and use this to access the spectacular views and waterfalls up stream. Or it would make a great wild camp.

Craig Maskeldie is an impressive hill, even along all the other hills that surround you. From the road you can spot the rushing Falls of Unich. A side trail leads over a wooden bridge closer to the falls. If you continue along that trail, it will take you to another hidden waterfall.

Falls of Unich

Highlight • Viewpoint

A powerful waterfall on the River Lee with a nice plunge pool large enough for a dip. The trail up to this point is easy running, the next section following the river is much rockier.

Loch Lee

Highlight • Trail

Nice walk up to the waterfall of Unich, if doing the circuit up by the waters it is a steep and very rough climb. Once on the open top of the hill, it does get very damp and boggy so care is needed as to where you are stepping.

Track to Queen's Well

Highlight • Trail

This point marks the end of the paved road and the beginning of the track towards Mount Keen. It starts nice and shallow up the beautiful glen, before the steep climb onto the mountain.
