Kilburn White Horse

Highlight • Historical Site

Kilburn White Horse is one of the most famous landmarks in North Yorkshire. The turf-cut figure, the most northerly of its kind in Britain, is 314 feet (96 m) long and 220 feet (67 m) high and dates from 1857.

When you are above the White Horse it is difficult to get a sense of its enormous scale so it is worth following the steps down to view it from below.

A moving memorial is to be found here to all the allied nations' aircrews who lost their lives during WW2, but also specifically to the crew of Halifax bomber JD105 10sqn Melbourne who crashed nearby in 1943.

There is something additionally evocative about this particular memorial, with the far-reaching commanding views of the countryside below and of the Yorkshire Dales in the far distance from Sutton Bank here.

This is the North York Moors National Park visitor centre, café and information centre. An excellent place to stop for food and drink. A series of footpaths from here, minutes from the centre itself, is very pleasant and there are excellent views all the way to Yorkshire Dales from near here. Also, spot the lovely wooden sculptures of animals peppered all over the place!

Sutton Bank Mountain Bike Trails

Highlight • MTB Park

A mix of gentle trail centre and bridleways track makes for a bit of a different riding experience out across parts of the Cleveland way. About halfway round is an excellent bit of downhill, but also be aware the climb back up shortly after is extremely steep and will get your legs and lungs burning!
