Donkey Pillory Statue in Toruń

Highlight • Monument

The method of punishing soldiers was different than the traditional pillory - here the culprit was simply placed on a donkey. It is shaped in such a way that it is very uncomfortable (you can easily check it on site). In case of more severe penalties, lead weights were tied to the convict's legs

In 1853, the people of Torun erected a monument to their most famous offspring, Nikolaus Copernicus, on the market square near the house where they were supposed to be born. Copernicus lived in Torun for many years. In 1807 Napoleon expressed astonishment that there was still no monument. The location of his grave in Frauenburg could not be found at that time. The memorial was financed through donations. The main amount came from the Prussian King Wilhelm IV.

Medieval Town of Toruń

Highlight • Historical Site

The old town of Toruń (German Thorn) was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997.
Except for a street from the late 19th century, almost the entire development is medieval. The historical area consists of the old town (city law 1231/1233) and the Neustadt (city law 1246), which developed as a craftsman settlement. Between both lies the castle ruin of the Teutonic Order. (Wikipedia)
A very nice and lively old town. There is a lot to visit, but also nice shops and restaurants.

Ciechocinek Graduation Towers

Highlight • Monument

The graduation towers in Ciechocinek - a unique and largest wooden structure in Europe for evaporating water from brine, were designed by Jakub Graff - professor at the Mining Academy in Kielce. Three such buildings were built here - arranged in the shape of a horseshoe. The construction of graduation towers I and II lasted from 1824 to 1828, the third one was built in 1859.
