National Monument Camp Vught

Highlight • Historical Site

This is a witness from a nonsensical and inglorious past! The former SS concentration camp Vught, near 's - Hertogenbosch (Herzogenbusch), also called Den Bosch, from World War II. It was one of three active concentration camps in the Netherlands.

Construction of the camp began in 1942. The construction costs of around 15 million guilders were mainly raised through confiscated Jewish assets.
The concentration camp was 1 km long and 350 meters wide.
On January 5, 1943, the camp became its inglorious destination
to hand over.
31,000 people were held here, including
12,000 Jews.
But also a Roma minority, political prisoners, Jehovah's Witnesses as well as resistance fighters and homosexuals.
On June 7, 1943, it became known that all Jewish children would have to leave the camp and be taken to a special children's camp and thus possibly separated from father and mother.
At least 750 men, women and children are known to have met a painful death here.

Today you can visit the site and the buildings for an entrance fee, as well as an information center that reports on this bad time with corresponding films and other documentaries ...

Moerputten Boardwalk

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

Walk across the Moerputtenbrug and through the Moerputten nature reserve south of Den Bosch. Discover the hidden history of the Langstraat railway bridges. This route leads via the railway embankment over the impressive railway bridge, after which you walk along the meadows, where it is full of flowers in the summer. Via the decking path through the swamp, you return to the railway embankment.

Moerputtenbrug
In 1890 the Langstraat railway line 's-Hertogenbosch-Lage Zwaluwe was put into use. The track ran through the wet low moor area of the Moerputten and therefore two bridges were built: the Moerputtenbrug and the Venkantbrug. The 600 meter long railway bridge is a beautiful example of industrial heritage from the 19th century. The huge, stately colossus consists of a riveted, iron construction that rests on 35 masonry pillars.

This boardwalk is beautifully situated, some parts covered in fairytale moss. This boardwalk partly leads through the low peat swamp. A spectacular way to experience the area.

Moerputten Bridge

Highlight • Bridge

The Moerputtenbrug is a historic structure that is part of the former Langstraatspoorlijn in the Netherlands. The bridge, located in the Moerputten nature reserve, was on the route between 's-Hertogenbosch and Lage Zwaluwe.

The original Moerputtenbrug was built in 1881 and served as an important connection for both passenger trains and freight transport. At the time, it was a technical feat due to the length of the bridge and the complex construction. The bridge consisted of several pillars that supported the track above the marshes and the water.

During the Second World War, in 1944, the bridge was blown up by the Dutch resistance to stop the advancing German troops. After the war, however, the bridge was rebuilt and put back into use.

Although the Langstraatspoorlijn was closed to train traffic in the 1970s, the Moerputtenbrug has been preserved as an important industrial heritage.
