Old Sodbury Village and Railway Tunnel Chimney

Highlight • Structure

Some would say this should be my hometown! There's a shop at the garage and a pub (The Dog) opposite. The turret on the hill is in fact a chimney for the railway tunnel that passes underneath.

The Church of Saint John the Baptist is around 900 years old and is a very interesting building to explore. It has two effigies of knights: one is late 14th century, carved in wood; the other is dated to 1240, carved in stone. The church is of late Norman period. Although it has been enlarged and altered, much of the original work remains. There are great views from the churchyard, too.

Woodcock Farm - Hill Fort

Highlight • Historical Site

This is an extraordinarily well-preserved example of an Iron Age hill fort. From the fort, you are rewarded with incredible views over the Frome Valley, Severn Vale and the Welsh mountains.

The Romans strengthened the fort for use as a camp to support their western frontier. In AD 577, the Saxon army used the fort as a camp before the Battle of Dyrham; a decisive military encounter between the West Saxons and the Britons of the West Country. The battle was a major victory for the Wessex forces.
