Watlington Market Town

Highlight • Viewpoint

The historic market town of Watlington is situated at the foot of the Chiltern escarpment on the route of the ancient Icknield Way.

Evidence of habitation here goes back to before the Romans. There have been some interesting discoveries in the area, such as the Watlington Hoard, a collection of silver items that date back to the era of Alfred the Great in the 9th century.

The town lies in the lee of the 787-foot (240 m) Watlington Hill, around which are many excellent hikes, rich in wildlife. The Watlington White Mark is a 270-foot (82 m) long spire carved in the chalk soil of the hill's flanks. It was carved in 1764 by local squire Edward Horne and is maintained by the community to this day.

Watlington Hill Bluebell Woodland

Highlight • Natural Monument

The sight, scent and spring-like atmosphere of a blooming bluebell woodland is one of natures most pleasant offers. And, with over half the global population of bluebells flowering on these shores, Britain’s beautiful blue spring is a quintessential part of our native landscape.

Follows the Oxfordshire Way. It's a steep bridle path, that can get slippy when wet. Good views across the valley.
