Twarożnik (Quark Stones)

Highlight • Natural Monument

Twarożnik (German Quarksteine, Czech Tvarožník) is the Polish name of a rock formation made of granite in the western part of the Silesian ridge of the Giant Mountains in Poland and the Czech Republic. It is located exactly on the Czech-Polish border at 1320 m altitude.
The quark stones consist of a heap of huge granite blocks. On the largest is a single, flat stone, a so-called rocking stone, which has emerged as the final result of the Wollsack weathering. The shape of the strongly rounded boulders is reminiscent of simple, traditional cheese making. Quark must be done first. The curd is stuffed into a cloth, the corners of which are folded and hung in this pillow-like shape to drip. The quark or a kind of cottage cheese is ready as soon as the mass is sufficiently dehydrated. Especially the Czech name contains references to the production. The word "tvář" stands for appearance, gestalt and "ručník" is the word for towel.
