Malmsmead is at the very heart of Doone Country right on the border between Devon and Somerset.

The medieval packhorse bridge and ancient ford cross the Badgworthy River and it is from here that you can easily access the Doone (or Badgworthy) Valley.

There are public toilets and a tea room here so it makes the perfect place to start and/or finish a walk.

The hamlet is full of connections to RD Blackmore's 'Lorna Doone', including Lorna Doone Farm and a memorial to Blackmore a short way up the valley.

Doone Valley or Badgworthy Valley is often known as Lorna Doone Country, after the 1869 novel of the same name by RD Blackmore.

His descriptions of the area inspired generations of people to fall in love with the beauty of Exmoor. His historical romance which intertwined local legend with actual places has meant this is an area long visited by literary tourists.

Badgworthy Medieval Village Ruins

Highlight • Structure

There are ruins of around 14 buildings here and although it was a medieval village, abandoned in the 15th century, one of the buildings was still occupied in 1814.

Being in the Doone Valley, the village also has a connection with RD Blackmore's 1869 novel, 'Lorna Doone'. It is thought that it is where the Doone family lived after their exile from Scotland.

This valley is offering a special microclimate, much milder and without the heavy winds of the open planes. plants are growing here which only a few hundred yards away have not succeeded to survive. Even rhododendron is growing in big bushes.
if someone wanted to live in Exmoor this valley would be a perfect hideaway.
No surprise that apparently there was apparently an ancient settlement. Remains however are rather scattered.
